The White Room
The Parlour , London
| The White Room was designed as a research and development project between Para-Site directors Lydia & Tamara and actors Ben Watson and Akin Gazi. The aim of this short 4 week project was to allow all four group members to explore ideas conjured by the amazing space of The Parlour Project Studio (run by Mapalim), and experiment with levels or tension through character development. Once the audience enters the space that is the home of A and B, they are introduced to the lives of these two strange characters who find it hard to live together, but impossible to live apart. For reasons undefined, these lonely chaps can't bear to bring themselves to leave their stark, white and rather hygenic flat and convince themselves that life in their 'home' is far safer and happier than the perils of the outside world. With bizarre rituals and weird habits, these two pass the time attempting to sleep, playing games and eating ready-made meals. But how long have they been there and how long can they go on? |

| Eventually A attempts to escape from the confines of B's friendship and the demons he sees when the lights go out. But it's not easy leaving The White Room and things finally come to a head in an explosive way. The White Room allowed Para-Site to focus on the intimate relationship that develops between these two characters, and embrace those everyday activities which are often avoided in live performance. By looking at the banal, the ordinary and the downright strange, Para-Site was able to try new ideas for the layout and design of the space, focusing on the power of light and daring to cover the whole floor with bubblewrap... |
