Welcome to Para-Site

The Frieze Art Fair, London

'Offstage' was selected by Annika Erikson to be part of her commission for Frieze Art Fair, 'Do You Want An Audience?'. Based in the large temporary marquee in Regents Park, Annika's make-shift stage acted as a platform for various different performances from artists seeking to present their work.
On this theme, Para-Site created a new production, set in the dressing room of a small community theatre. We see three actors preparing for their first amateur performance of 'Oedipus Rex'.
As the story unfolds it becomes apparent that the show is poorly directed, badly acted and the costumes are mostly bits and bobs picked up from the local charity shop. Oedipus' toga is a tablecloth, and Michelle's best prop is her glued on fake beard.
CAST
Zoe - Tamara von Werthern
Robert - Corin Rhys Jones
Michelle - Lydia Fraser-Ward
But as the sister of the director and lead actor Robert, Michelle finds herself once again dragged into a performance for which she has not only no skill but also, no interest. But the team are dependent on her and her interchangable small bit parts which make up the rest of characters in the play.
TECHNICAL
Make-Up - Monica Teufel
Photography - Christian Schmermer
Zoe, on the other hand, is dedicated to the production, perhaps because she is naively convinced that somehow it will lead to fame and fortune but also because she has a crush on Robert. Completely unaware of this, Robert does his best to motivate the troops and promises high hopes for the production. Leading a bizarre warm-up and practising his long monologues before the show, Robert dismisses Zoe's advances as sheer enthusiasm and even ignores the obvious hatred between the two girls.

The feud is soon worsened when Zoe overhears Michelle ranting about her and they start screaming at each other, much to the upset of Robert. But as with all petty squabbles, the girls finally work things out once they admit their own faults and Michelle even works up the courage to confess to her brother that she hates his am-dram theatricals.

Finally the Deputy Stage Manager gives the 5 minute call and they receive the news that no one has shown up to watch their opening night. Usual practice would be to close the show but surprisingly Michelle rallies the group and they decide to play the empty house together once last time.
